FSC Gears Up for Third Year of Making Homes Safe Havens

In its third year, one of the Family Sunshine Center’s signature fund-raising events, Making Homes Safe Havens, is scheduled for April 6, 2008, at the RSA Activity Center in Montgomery. The primary sponsor of the event is Merrill Lynch. A cross-section of Montgomery pitches in to make this family-focused event fun for everyone. This year will feature, as in the past, entertainment by local musicians, a fashion show by the Name Dropper and lunch courtesy of a coalition of Montgomery restaurateurs. Building from the original group of birdhouse donors, this year’s group is as excited as can be about decorating birdhouses for the silent auction. In addition, Bob Parker, a builder affiliated with The Waters community in Pike Road, has built this year’s playhouse. This beautiful country cottage will be the jewel in some lucky child’s backyard.

“While the planning of this event gets easier each year, we continue to devote substantial time and effort toward making this an afternoon to remember for families in the region,” said Karen Fisher, who is chairing the event for the second consecutive year. The brainchild of long-time board member and current board President Jeanie Holloway, Making Homes Safe Havens has grown each year in its fund-raising capacity and its success in raising public awareness. “It is vital that we raise funds to sustain the work of the Family Sunshine Center in bringing shelter, hope and healing to victims of domestic violence, and equally important that we share with the community the dangers of living in a home where violence is present. It creates long-lasting scars for all family members, including children. We designed this event to focus primarily on children because April is Child Abuse Prevention Month,” said Holloway.

According to Karen Fisher, the event grows each year, with increased community involvement. “The first year, we adopted Ted Nobles of Nobles restaurant as an advocate for the Family Sunshine Center when he volunteered to donate lunch for the MHSH event. The next year, he recruited help from Lunde’s, and the owners and their staff became Family Sunshine Center advocates. Now, in our third year, the restaurateurs have recruited the assistance of Leslie Bailey of the Silver Spoon and Marengo to cater the event. Then, we have had participation by the Montgomery Youth Chorale, the Rosewood String Quartet, more than 20 area artists who decorated birdhouses, playhouse builders, local teams of decorators and others. This multiplies our influence in the region,” she said, “and advances information about domestic violence and the services provided by the Family Sunshine Center.”

Making Homes Safe Havens will begin at noon on April 6, with WSFA TV Anchor Judd Davis as emcee. Individual tickets, which are priced at $50.00 each, or a table for eight for $350, can be purchased in advance by calling 334.206.2100. Call this number, as well, if you are interested in becoming a sponsor. Tickets can also be purchased on-line on our donation page. Please designate your donation to MHSH in the box provided.
