Making Homes Safe Havens is just around the corner!

In its fourth year, one of the Family Sunshine Center’s signature fund-raising events, Making Homes Safe Havens, is scheduled for April 19, 2009, at the RSA Activity Center in Montgomery. A cross-section of Montgomery comes together to make this family-focused event fun for everyone. This year will feature, as in the past, entertainment by the Rosewood Quartet and the Montgomery Youth Chorale, a fashion show by the Name Dropper and lunch courtesy of Nobles. Once again, The Waters community in Pike Road will sponsor one of its builders to build this year’s playhouse. Building from the original group of birdhouse donors, this year’s group is as excited as can be about decorating birdhouses for the silent auction. A new participant in birdhouse art this year is noted artist Ron McDowell. McDowell has been commissioned to do portraits and other art projects for such noted figures as Michael Jackson, the family of Lionel Richie, the State of Alabama, Mayor Richard Arrington and others outside the state and nation.

His bird house features a pair of brown-eyed dogs on the front, the fanciful flight of butterflies on each side, and “the most compellingly beautiful baby snuggled up to an American flag on the back. It causes a very physical reaction—chill bumps, tingling sensations and nearly tears,” said Development Director Anna Lee Ingalls. Ingalls and Making Homes Safe Havens Chairperson Karen Fisher hope that the birdhouse evokes similar reactions at the fundraising event, and that birdhouse bidders are equally moved by the work of art.

While this is the first bird house to be donated to the cause, event planners expect 20 to 30 more to come in between now and April 19. “We are very excited about this year’s event. As people have come to recognize the event, we have more artists wanting to paint a bird house and more people and sponsors wanting to be involved,” said Karen Fisher.

According to Fisher, the event grows each year, with increased community involvement. “This multiplies our influence in the region,” Fisher said, “and advances information about domestic violence, child abuse and the services provided by the Family Sunshine Center.”

Making Homes Safe Havens will begin at noon on April 19, with WSFA TV Anchor Judd Davis as emcee. A table for eight can be purchased for $500. Individual tickets are available upon request. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 334.206.2100. Call this number, as well, if you are interested in becoming a sponsor. Tickets can also be purchased on-line on our donation page. Please designate your donation to “MHSH09” in the box provided.
