FSC and Partners Plan Clergy Training for DV Awareness Month
(Sept 28, 2007) -- In the next several weeks, clergy members from across the

domestic violence sponsored by Legal Services Alabama, the Family Sunshine
Center, the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Task Force, Huntingdon
College, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and others in the
Montgomery community.

The training is set for October 11, 2007, at Huntingdon College’s
Stallworth Hall, and will feature a morning session, slated to begin at 8:30
a.m., and an evening session, which will start at 5:30 p.m. Pastors and
domestic violence specialists will address the spiritual, legal, and safety
considerations that must be acknowledged when dealing with victims of
domestic violence. According to Dr. Mark LaBranche of Huntingdon College, a
longtime Family Sunshine Center supporter, “Only one in 10 domestic violence
victims turn first to their local shelters. However, they will seek help in
their faith community.”
Dr. Susan Diamond of First Christian Church feels strongly about
educating pastors about the dynamics of domestic violence. “We want to equip
pastors to be aware of the domestic violence in their congregations and how
to talk about it in light of our faith,” she said.
