FSC Receives Governor’s Grant to Expand School-based Violence Prevention
Programs
In October, the Family Sunshine Center received notification that it was
one of a small number of programs around the state to receive a Governor’s
Safe and Drug-free Schools and Communities grant, which is administered
through ADECA (Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.)
The $45,000.00 will be used to extend one part-time prevention educator
position to full-time, and another to nearly full-time. One prevention
educator will continue offering the model Second Step violence prevention
curriculum, expanding the number of presentations, in public elementary
schools in Montgomery County, and the other will work to develop a system
for offering the middle/junior high curriculum to 7th graders and others in
Montgomery County public schools.
“We were very excited about receiving this grant. Since the agency’s
Outreach funding through the Children’s Trust Fund (CTF) grant program has
shown a trend of diminishing, the governor’s grant not only saved our
Outreach efforts, but also allows us to expand into middle and junior high
schools,” said Family Sunshine Center Executive Director Karen Sellers.
