Family Sunshine Center Provides Hope, Healing to Domestic Violence Victims in Elmore, Six Other Counties
Family violence is the most common but least reported crime in the United States, and one agency, the Family Sunshine Center in south central Alabama, takes its mission to help victims of domestic violence very seriously. "A community dedicated to taking care of its less fortunate citizens should be aware of domestic violence, and know where to refer individuals when such a crime is reported. Of course, we are trying to create an environment where victims of domestic violence know about the Family Sunshine Center, and know how to reach us in an emergency," said Karen Sellers, executive director of the Family Sunshine Center.
The Family Sunshine Center was established in 1981 as a result of the merger of the Child Abuse and Neglect Board and the Domestic Abuse Shelter Board. The center has a 27-member board of directors and employs 63 full- and part-time employees. The center serves seven counties, including Elmore. "Our center provides shelter services, counseling for victims of domestic violence and their children, transitional housing for individuals trying to get back on their feet and develop an independent life away from the abuser, and other support services for domestic violence victims," Ms. Sellers said.
Last fiscal year, the Family Sunshine Center received nearly 3,000 crisis calls-oftentimes desperate cries for help. As a result, 9,505 total days of shelter were provided to families fleeing the dangers of their home.
