(Dec. 14, 2004) – Alabama First Lady Patsy Riley today delivered “Blankets with a Blessing” to the Family Sunshine Center in Montgomery to begin the distribution of blankets collected during the charitable effort. Over 1,100 blankets were collected in the statewide effort to benefit Alabama’s less fortunate. A written blessing from Mrs. Riley has been attached to each blanket.

“Alabamians are generous people and the outpouring of support for this project shows how much they care for the less fortunate,” Mrs. Riley said. “We hope these blankets provide warmth for their body and that the blessing will warm their soul. At this time of year, our hearts especially reach out to those in need of a helping hand.”

Mrs. Riley presented a blanket to Family Sunshine Center Executive Director Karen Sellers to represent the blankets that will be given to shelters across Alabama. During the coming weeks, the blankets will be distributed to over 30 shelters statewide.

“I want to personally thank the many volunteers and organizations that collected blankets, gave monetary donations and spent countless hours tying the blessings to each blanket,” Mrs. Riley added.

The blankets were collected during the month of November at drop-off points in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.

Below is a list of shelters the blankets will be distributed to over the coming weeks. The shelters were selected based on information from the Alabama Department of Human Resources’ Adult Protective Services Division and various recommendations.
