The following characteristics might help you identify a potential batterer. They are certainly not definitive signs that a man is a batterer, only that he has the potential to become one.

bullet Does he report having been physically or psychologically abused as a child?
bullet Was the man's mother battered by his father?
bullet Does he play with guns and use them to protect himself against other people?
bullet Does he lose his temper frequently and more easily than seems necessary?
bullet Does he commit acts of violence against objects and things rather than people?
bullet Does he drink alcohol excessively?
bullet Does he display an unusual amount of jealousy when you are with him? Is he jealous of other significant people in your life?
bullet Does he expect you to spend all of your free time with him or to keep him informed of your whereabouts?
bullet Does he become enraged when you do not listen to his advice?
bullet Does he appear to have a dual personality?
bullet Is there a sense of overkill in his cruelty or in his kindness?
bullet Do you get a sense of fear when he becomes angry with you? Does not making him angry become an important part of your behavior?
bullet Does he have rigid ideas of what people should do that are determined by male or female sex-role stereotypes?

Do you think or feel you are being battered? If so, the probability is high that you are being battered and should seek help now.
